The reference photo of Steve McQueen was the heart of this painting. The way he exudes effortless coolness with that classic ‘V’ is the epitome of 70s swagger. His calm confidence and passion for racing are encapsulated in this single gesture, and I wanted to honor that with a minimalist approach.
I painted Steve entirely in greys, using subtle gradients to bring out his features, while allowing the red and blue of his racing suit to pop against the simplicity of the rest of the composition. The white of his suit and the background blend together, creating a unified feel that lets the powerful gesture speak for itself. By painting with less, I aimed to elevate the essence of Steve McQueen’s coolness, giving it space to breathe and letting the iconic ‘V’ take center stage.
This piece isn’t just a painting, it’s a snapshot of an era, a nod to the timelessness of McQueen’s style, and a tribute to the raw, understated coolness that defined both him and the 70s.
