CAn stand up, will stand up
'Stand Up' Upfest 2018 Mural: Feminist Superhero in Street Art
'Every girl who could have the power, will have the power, can stand up, will stand up.'
I was lucky enough to be invited back to Upfest, the highlight of my year! This time, I wanted to follow up on my previous piece, Pop Girl, by creating a more refined and impactful painting. My goal was to bring to life my own feminist superhero, a figure fully equipped with pop culture armory and ready to defend what she believes in.
In this piece, she wears an R2-D2 helmet from Star Wars and wields She-Ra’s iconic Sword of Protection. Her pose is inspired by the famous Rosie the Riveter “We Can Do It!” poster, re-imagined with a street art twist. Comic book-style text boxes read:
“Every girl who could have the power, will have the power. Can stand up, will stand up.”
This powerful quote, written by Joss Whedon for Buffy the Vampire Slayer, perfectly embodies her spirit.
Spray-painted in shades of grey with vibrant blue accents on R2’s helmet, her sword, and her striking superhero blue hair, this piece has become one of my favorite creations to date. It’s a celebration of strength, feminism and power.
