PoP GIRL
'Pop Girl' Mural Upfest 2017, a pop culture heroine.
Pop Art is about liking things
At Upfest 2017, Europe’s largest street art festival held in the heart of Bristol, I painted Pop Girl. This mural is my modern-day tribute to a pop culture heroine, blending nostalgic references with a call to arms.
Inspired by Tank Girl, Pop Girl embodies the idea that if my generation were ever called to fight, we’d arm ourselves with symbols of our pop culture upbringing. She dons an R2-D2 helmet from Star Wars, wields the Sword of Omens from Thundercats, and carries good luck charms from Harry Potter and The Legend of Zelda. Armed with these icons, she’s ready to take on the world.
The streets of Bristol come alive with vibrant murals, pop art, and street art that draw crowds from all over the world. Despite the torrential rain, the festival’s atmosphere, spirit, and creativity made it the highlight of the year for me.
