ABOUT THE PAINTING

WHAT INSPIRED ME

This is the second painting I’ve done of Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock Holmes, and it’s one that holds a special place in my heart. I painted this original piece on a long, slim canvas, turning Sherlock into a pop art silhouette that captures the essence of his character in a minimalist yet powerful way.

For this piece, I chose to focus on his iconic coat, the coat that has become as synonymous with Sherlock as his hat and pipe. In my mind, that coat represents his sharp intellect and mysterious aura. The silhouette of Sherlock is immediately recognisable, and I used the tiny red details and scarf to add depth and highlight the subtle beauty of his iconic look. This choice of colors and structure was intentional, as I wanted the coat to stand as a strong focal point, replacing the traditional Sherlock hat and pipe.

As I painted this, I imagined it as a reflection of Sherlock looking in the mirror. It’s an homage to both the character and the actor’s incredible performance, rendered in the bold, dynamic style of pop art.
