But I Love You

In Exhibition

But… I Love You in this pop art painting, I explore the duality of strength and vulnerability through the portrait of a powerful superhero-like woman. She’s wearing her iconic red Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles mask, but her usual fearless, determined expression has softened into one of sadness. This moment captures her saying goodbye, whether to a person, a memory, or her past. The speech bubble next to her simply reads, “but… I love you,” leaving it open for you to interpret what she’s letting go of.

ABOUT THE PAINTING

WHAT INSPIRED ME

But… I Love You in this pop art painting, I explore the duality of strength and vulnerability through the portrait of a powerful superhero-like woman. She’s wearing her iconic red Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles mask, but her usual fearless, determined expression has softened into one of sadness. This moment captures her saying goodbye, whether to a person, a memory, or her past. The speech bubble next to her simply reads, “but… I love you,” leaving it open for you to interpret what she’s letting go of.

For me, this piece symbolizes the complexity of emotions that even the strongest among us feel. As a superhero-esque figure, she embodies strength, but the shift in her expression and her emotional goodbye show that no one is invulnerable to loss, heartache, or change. The TMNT mask, a symbol of her toughness, now contrasts with the fragility of the moment, creating a poignant mix of power and sadness.

I wanted the speech bubble to be intentionally vague, allowing each viewer to project their own experiences onto the painting. This painting is a reminder that even those who wear the mask of a hero or protector aren’t immune to moments of deep reflection and emotional vulnerability.

She was also painted as a small scale mural for an ‘outside’ gallery in Bristol, UK:
