Army Of One

In Exhibition

My pop art painting, “Army of One,” is a tribute to the strength and independence of women fighting societal battles every day. This piece, created using a mix of spray paint and acrylic, portrays a strong female figure who stands alone but powerful. With her blue hair flowing, her hands wrapped in boxer wraps, and a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles mask across her face, she is ready for battle, representing both pop culture and feminist ideals.

ABOUT THE PAINTING

WHAT INSPIRED ME

My pop art painting, “Army of One,” is a tribute to the strength and independence of women fighting societal battles every day. This piece, created using a mix of spray paint and acrylic, portrays a strong female figure who stands alone but powerful. With her blue hair flowing, her hands wrapped in boxer wraps, and a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles mask across her face, she is ready for battle, representing both pop culture and feminist ideals.

I wanted her stance and gaze to convey defiance and self-reliance, she’s not waiting for anyone to come and save her. Instead, she is an “army of one,” leading her own fight against the obstacles society places on women. The Japanese-inspired sun in the background symbolizes her strength and power, an ancient emblem of endurance and rising above.

The TMNT mask and boxing wraps add a pop culture twist, but they also represent the tools women arm themselves with to fight for equality and recognition in a world that often tries to diminish their worth. The quote “army of one” felt fitting for this work because this woman, while standing alone, represents the unity and strength of all women who battle against societal constraints. Whether in the workplace, at home, or in public spaces, this figure is a powerful reminder that women are strong enough to stand up and push forward, even when standing alone.

A version of this painting was painted as a mural for the Swindon Paint Festival, UK,  in 2023:
