The idea was to build the entire face from just one layer of stencil in white on black, using shapes, patterns, and swirls that come together to form an abstract, yet recognizable, portrait. The result is an amalgamation of details, where each section, in isolation, is interesting, but when combined, it reveals a striking face.

The challenge of this painting wasn’t just the final piece, but also the process of creating the stencil. I wanted to test my skills with a concept that’s simple in its structure but complex in its execution. It’s a single-layer stencil, similar to the techniques used by artists like Banksy and Blek le Rat, but with a twist: I added free-flowing, detailed touches that elevate the work beyond a standard stencil painting.
I’ve been a huge Amy Acker fan since I saw her portray Fred in Angel. Her range and depth as an actress have always inspired me. After seeing her in Much Ado About Nothing, a film shot entirely in black and white, I couldn’t help but think of the simplicity and contrast of black-and-white stencil art. The high-contrast visuals of that film brought this concept to life, making Amy the perfect muse for this project.
This painting is a true testament to the beauty of complex stencils. It’s as much about the cutting and spraying technique as it is about creating the final image, combining detailed artistry with structural simplicity to capture Amy Acker’s essence in an entirely new and captivating way.
Painted on 12oz cotton box canvas and ready to hang. Painted with a wrap around effect so there are no unsightly nails or staples,
or visible canvas.
Acrylic paintings are painted in a mixture of Golden, Liquitex and Winsor and Newton professional acrylic paints. Gouache paintings are painted in Liquitex. Spray painted paintings use
MTN 94, Montana Gold and Molotow.
All painting are finished with a non yellowing spray matt varnish.
